This is the sixth and final installment in the Mornings 101 series that focuses on how to implement the most effective strategies for dominating your day before breakfast.

On my podcast, The 5 AM Miracle, I talk a lot about early mornings, healthy habits, personal growth, and rockin’ productivity. The glue that holds everything together is this simple and powerful concept: dominate your day before breakfast.

Three years ago when I was first beginning my own journey into early mornings I realized right away that there was a huge opportunity sitting right in front of me. After waking up at 5:00 a.m. on the first day, and heading out for a run, I concluded that this had to happen again.

Within a few weeks I noticed a dramatic improvement in my daily productivity and my health. Though I didn’t have a name for it yet, I was already putting the pieces together for my own 5 AM Miracle, which was made possible by optimizing the most important hours of the day.

2 Options to Dominate Your Day Before Breakfast

How you choose to dominate your day will likely be different than others. The beauty of an early morning is that those hours are yours and yours alone. You can do with them what you wish.

My recommendation is to take your morning hours seriously. If you plan this out well, you can experience your own miracles and make enormous progress on your life’s grandest goals.

1. Connect the Dots

Waking up at 5:00 a.m. is arbitrary. Waking up early at all is also not necessary. Honestly, you can skip the whole thing and sleep in, but then you will miss out on the greatest opportunity the early morning provides: isolated time to work on your most important goal.

From my perspective there is one activity that supersedes all others early in the morning, and that is working exclusively on the one goal in your life that will make the biggest difference. When you connect the dots between your morning routine and your biggest goal you are able to optimize the early morning hours by working hard on what matters most to you.

Think of it this way. If your life’s biggest goal is to start your own business, then I would suggest scheduling as much time as possible early in the day to work exclusively on your business.

If your life’s biggest goal is an upcoming triathlon, then I would recommend waking up and working your training plan. Swim, cycle, or run every morning and guarantee yourself the progress you need to see.

In my upcoming book, also titled The 5 AM Miracle, I define the miracle as the extraordinary act of dominating your day before breakfast; intentionally bouncing out of bed bright and early in order to make significant progress on your grandest goals.

Your mission is to spring out from under the covers and make your grand goal your highest priority first thing in the day.

2. Prepare for Action

Choosing to spend your morning hours on your most important goal is certainly powerful, but it’s possible that your goal can only be worked on after your morning routine is over. For example, if your number one focus right now is your job and that doesn’t begin until 9:00 a.m. at the office across town, then your mission is to prepare your mind, body, and soul for the work ahead.

Honestly, on most days this is the option I choose. In fact, this is by far my favorite strategy to dominate my day because it is the one that pays the biggest dividends down the road.

Preparing for action means focusing on self-care, eating a healthy breakfast, working out with intensity, and feeding your mind the nourishment it needs to inspire and inform your work.

My ideal days begin with a large compilation of energy-boosting healthy habits ranging from meditation, prayer, and reading, to running, lifting weights, and making a large green smoothie.

When you focus your morning activities on energy and self-care you are enabling your best self to shine as soon as you begin your work day. Imagine yourself bouncing out of bed with enthusiasm, eating a healthy breakfast, working out, and springing into the office with more energy than you have ever experienced. How much work will you get done? How great will you feel?

This is the power of designing your mornings with the goal of total domination.
